Spring on the St. Clair River arrives with deceptive speed. By early May, the freighters are running full schedules, weekend traffic on the river is picking up, and boat owners are pulling covers off and asking: is it ready? For a modern fiberglass runabout, commissioning might mean a battery charge and a fuel fill. For a vintage Chris-Craft, a restored Lyman, a mid-century Century Resorter, or any other classic wooden or early fiberglass hull, spring commissioning is a methodical process that determines whether you spend the season on the water or in the shop.

That experience has taught the crew here that the mistakes owners make in spring setup lead directly to the breakdowns, leaks, and engine failures that happen on the water in July. This guide walks through commissioning the way we approach it for every classic boat that comes through our facility - engine first, then systems, then hull, then safety gear, then the dock trial before the first run.

Engine Commissioning: Start Here, Spend the Most Time Here

Whether you are running an original Chrysler Crown, a Chris-Craft K, a Gray Marine, an early Volvo or OMC stern drive, or a modern replacement engine, the sequence is the same: inspect before you start, address problems before you launch, and never rush the first start.

Remove the Fogging Oil from the Cylinders

A properly winterized engine had fogging oil sprayed into the cylinders through the spark plug holes or the carburetor intake before storage. That oil protected the cylinder walls, but it needs to come out before the engine runs. Pull the spark plugs and, with the ignition disabled, crank the engine briefly to expel the oil. Inspect every plug while it is out. Replace any plug that is fouled, corroded, or that shows heavy carbon buildup. On many classic engines, spark plug access is tight - do this at the dock in good light, not floating in the river.

The Raw-Water Impeller: Replace It Every Spring

The rubber impeller inside the raw-water pump is the single most important wear item on any raw-water-cooled engine - and the vast majority of classic boat engines use raw-water cooling, drawing river water directly through the engine to manage heat. Pull the old impeller, inspect it, and keep it aboard as an emergency spare. When installing the new one, lubricate it with dish soap or a lubricant specified by the manufacturer - not petroleum-based products, which degrade rubber.

After start-up, stand at the stern and watch the raw-water discharge at the exhaust outlet. Water should flow within thirty seconds of the engine running. If it does not, shut down immediately. Do not wait to see if it self-corrects.

Fuel System Inspection

Varnish in the bowl looks like a brownish lacquer coating on the metal surfaces. Light deposits can be cleaned in place with carburetor cleaner. Heavy varnish deposits, or any water sitting in the bowl, require more thorough cleaning. A varnished carburetor will not run correctly no matter how good the rest of the engine is.

For older metal fuel tanks common in classic boats, inspect the tank exterior for rust and the vent lines for blockages. If your boat has an inspection port, open it and look inside: dark sediment or a strong sour smell means the tank contents should be pumped out and properly disposed of before fresh fuel goes in. Older fiberglass or metal tanks can also develop pinhole leaks at seams - any smell of fuel in the bilge or near the tank requires investigation before start-up.

If the fuel was treated with a quality stabilizer last fall and the filter and bowl look clean, you may be able to run what is in the tank. Top it off with fresh fuel to dilute any degradation.

Electrical Systems

Classic boats range from the nearly all-mechanical - early mahogany runabouts with magneto ignition and no electrical system to speak of - to mid-century and later vessels with 12-volt systems running instruments, bilge pumps, navigation lights, and accessories. Whatever your boat has, a methodical spring check prevents problems that can leave you stranded or create fire hazards.

Battery

A battery that sat all winter without a maintenance charger has likely suffered sulfation - a process where lead sulfate crystals form on the plates and reduce capacity. Bring the battery to full charge with a quality charger, then load-test it. A battery that cannot hold a load under test should be replaced before launch. A dead battery on the St. Clair River, with the current pushing you toward the navigation channel, is not a minor inconvenience. Budget for a new battery if the old one fails the load test rather than hoping for the best.

Connections, Wiring, and the Bilge Pump

A dry wooden hull after storage is going to take on water when it goes in - this is how wood-planked boats work, and it is not a cause for alarm if the boat was sound going into storage. What you are looking for in spring is change: anything that looks or feels different from how it was last fall.

Run your hand along every seam you can access. Seam compound that is deeply cracked, missing in sections, or has dried to a hard, non-flexible state needs to be re-caulked before launch. A seam that was tight last year but has opened noticeably over winter may reflect wood movement from moisture cycling during storage - inspect the surrounding planking carefully for any accompanying problems.

Press your thumb firmly against the bottom planking at every discolored spot and around every accessible fastener. Sound wood resists the pressure. Inspect the varnish on mahogany topsides and brightwork carefully. Where the varnish has failed and water has gotten under it to discolor the wood, more extensive work is needed. Varnish that looks intact but has gone hazy or lost its gloss is near the end of its useful life and will not protect the wood effectively through another season.

If the bottom paint needs refreshing, spring commissioning is the time to apply it while the hull is dry and accessible. Follow the manufacturer's instructions precisely. Most ablative antifouling paints have a specified window between application and launch - apply too early or too late and the product may not perform as intended.

Safety Equipment: What Michigan and Federal Law Require

Federal law and Michigan state law both specify required safety equipment based on vessel length and use. Requirements change periodically, and equipment has service lives. Verify current requirements with the U.S. Coast Guard and Michigan DNR before every season rather than assuming last year's setup still qualifies. At minimum, inspect the following:
